Advisers Will Share New Investment Ideas in 2017

Clients are demanding new approaches to investing and new ways to address fiduciary risks; advisers are finding ways to oblige them.

When considering ways to enhance their practices and better serve their clients in 2017, financial advisers will strive to deliver new investment strategies and deeper compliance support, according to a new survey from SEI Advisor Network.

Practice reforms set for 2017 cover investment strategies, technology implementations and various other areas of practice management. Compared to 2016, advisers have many of the same priorities in relation to growing their business.

Many will focus on building referral networks, for example, and others will strive to increase clients’ awareness of additional services that they may not know the adviser offers. Of course, getting ready to comply with the Department of Labor (DOL) fiduciary rule is paramount.

Beyond planning to make more contact with clients through email marketing, events and social media, advisers will offer more tax-managed solutions. John Anderson, managing director and head of practice management services for the SEI Advisor Network, feels the advisers are resolving to create better, more compliant businesses.

“While investment strategies are lower on the top ten list, they point to ways that advisers can differentiate themselves from robo- or retail solutions,” Anderson explains. “We’re glad to see that advisers are eager to focus on goals based, tax managed solutions and managed volatility solutions in 2017.”

In terms of enhancing their practice with technology during 2017, more than a quarter (28%) of advisers surveyed said they plan to implement automated workflows to increase efficiencies. Advisers are also interested in improving their social media profiles and upgrading their client facing website.
