Mutual Funds Continue Strong Growth in October

The combined assets of the nation's mutual funds increased by $435 billion, or 3.6%, to $12.356 trillion in October, according to the Investment Company Institute (ICI).

Long-term funds – stock, bond, and hybrid funds – had a net inflow of $24.80 billion in October, versus an inflow of $16.02 billion in September, ICI data showed.

Stock funds posted an inflow of $11.26 billion for the month, compared with an inflow of $7.49 billion in September. U.S. funds that primarily invest overseas posted an inflow of $14.97 billion in October, while funds that primarily invest in the U.S. had an outflow of $3.71 billion.

Bond funds had an inflow of $11.70 billion in October, compared with an inflow of $7.43 billion in September. Taxable bond funds had an inflow of $10.98 billion for the month, and municipal bond funds posted an inflow of $719 million.

Money market funds increased by a net $105.52 billion in the month, compared with an inflow of $64.11 billion last month. Funds offered primarily to institutions had an inflow of $92.2 billion, while funds offered primarily to individuals had an inflow of $13.3 billion.

Hybrid funds posted an inflow of $1.84 billion in October, compared with an inflow of $1.10 billion in September.
